Representatives and friends of several Ontario B Corps assembled at Enviro-Stewards’ Elmira office on February 14th to meet one another and to learn more about the B Corp movement in Canada.  Certified B Corporations are companies that use the power of business to solve social and environmental problems.

Joyce Sou (Manager, B Corporation and Social Impact Metrics at MaRS Discovery District) provided an excellent overview of the current B Corp movement in Canada.  To date, there are 39 B Corps in Canada (20 in Ontario, 15 in BC, and 4 in Alberta).

The group also discussed ways to promote the B Corp movement and encourage companies to become certified B Corporations.  Local and national media coverage, as well as networking with suppliers and customers, were just a few of the ways that the B Corp movement can grow in Ontario.  If you would like to learn more about how to become a certified B Corporation, please visit the B Corp website here.

B Corp members sign the "Declaration of Interdependence" in front of the site where the USA’s Declaration of Independence was signed in 1776.

As described on the B Corporation website:

“Certified B Corporations are a new type of corporation which uses the power of business to solve social and environmental problems.

B Corps, unlike traditional businesses:

1. Meet comprehensive and transparent social and environmental performance standards;
2. Meet higher legal accountability standards
3. Build business constituency for good business.”

B corporations have third-party certified benefits for society and the environment.  Enviro-Stewards scored in the “Area of Excellence” (over 60%) in every category. Our “B Impact Report” is shown in the image to the right (our full B Corp webpage can be found here).

Bruce Taylor (president of Enviro-Stewards) and Reg Snyder (the company’s CFO) recently attended a B corporation workshop in Pennsylvania to meet other members of certified B Corporations.  The movement is rapidly growing in the US, where there are now 468 certified B Corps as well as several states with B Corp legislation.  Currently there are only 20 certified B Corps in Canada.  The photo below was taken in front of the site where the USA’s Declaration of Independence was signed in 1776.  In front of this historic site, each member of the group signed B Corp’s Declaration of Interdependence.

Enviro-Stewards was subsequently retained by Chudleigh’s to assist them in completing Walmart’s Supplier Sustainability Assessment, which involved calculating and reporting the facility’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions to the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP).

Highlights of the P2 & E2 assessment include:

• $15,000/year in potential savings by diverting peels & juice from sanitary sewer
• $23,000/year in potential savings by sending organic waste directly to compost or animal feed
• $21,000/year saved by repairing malfunctioning microwave cooling water valve

Enviro-Stewards’ office is located in a renovated 100 year old Furniture factory in Elmira, Ontario.  During 2011, our staff grew by more than 25% and additional floorspace became available to us.  This space includes a new boardroom with sustainable design features such as:

• Conference Table by Calstone – 0% to Landfill Guarantee
• A lighting retrofit to reduce total fixture amp draw by 50%
• Daylighting by independently switching the bank of lights adjacent to the window
• Upgraded windows and reuse of the original exterior (single pane) windows as interior windows to permit daylighting of the interior side of the board room
