Tim Hortons 2011 Sustainability Report Features BioSand Filters Sponsored Through Enviro-Stewards’ Projects in South Sudan

In 2010, Fruition Fruits & Fills, which makes the icing and fillings for Tim Hortons donuts, sponsored the construction and installation of 40 BioSand Filters (BSFs) in South Sudan, Africa. These 40 BSFs were featured in Tim Hortons’ recently released 2011 Sustainability Report (see below).

Scanning the QR Code on the Sustainability Credit pictured above with a smartphone will take you to a Google Map showing the location of BSF installations (shown below).

Fruition’s plant manager at the time, Don Bell, travelled with Bruce Taylor to South Sudan in 2010 to inspect some of the BSF installations. Bruce met Don when Enviro-Stewards was performing a Pollution Prevention (P2) audit of the Fruition facility located in Oakville, Ontario. Ontario B Corporations Meet at Enviro-Stewards’ Office

Representatives and friends of several Ontario B Corps assembled at Enviro-Stewards’ Elmira office on February 14th to meet one another and to learn more about the B Corp movement in Canada. Certified B Corporations are companies that use the power of business to solve social and environmental problems.

Joyce Sou (Manager, B Corporation and Social Impact Metrics at MaRS Discovery District) provided an excellent overview of the current B Corp movement in Canada. To date, there are 39 B Corps in Canada (20 in Ontario, 15 in BC, and 4 in Alberta).

The group also discussed ways to promote the B Corp movement and encourage companies to become certified B Corporations. Local and national media coverage, as well as networking with suppliers and customers, were just a few of the ways that the B Corp movement can grow in Ontario. Enviro-Stewards Featured in the Kitchener Record and the Guelph Mercury

Enviro-Stewards Inc. and PeaceWorks were featured in the Kitchener Record and Guelph Mercury’s year end business retrospectives (December 31, 2011). Among other things, the article reported on Enviro-Stewards’ services to

Enviro-Stewards’ Transit Bus Wash Rainwater Harvesting & Rinse Water Reclamation Project Selected for Funding

Enviro-Stewards’ design for a Transit Bus Wash Rainwater Harvesting & Rinse Water Reclamation Project with the City of Guelph has been selected for funding as part of Ontario’s Showcasing Water Innovation Initiative. Approximately $2 million will be provided by the Province to fund water projects in Guelph, including $89,100 for the Transit Bus Wash project.

A feature in the Guelph Mercury on this story was recently published on-line.

Bruce Taylor, President of Enviro-Stewards, participated in a media event celebrating this achievement (see photo below from the event).

Enviro-Stewards Receives B Corporation Certification

B Corp members sign the "Declaration of Interdependence" in front of the site where the USA’s Declaration of Independence was signed in 1776.

As described on the B Corporation website:

“Certified B Corporations are a new type of corporation which uses the power of business to solve social and environmental problems.

B Corps, unlike traditional businesses:

Meet comprehensive and transparent social and environmental performance standards;
Meet higher legal accountability standards
Build business constituency for good business.”

B corporations have third-party certified benefits for society and the environment. Enviro-Stewards scored in the “Area of Excellence” (over 60%) in every category. Our “B Impact Report” is shown in the image to the right (our full B Corp webpage can be found here).

Enviro-Stewards' B Corp Score

Bruce Taylor (president of Enviro-Stewards) and Reg Snyder (the company’s CFO) recently attended a B corporation workshop in Pennsylvania to meet other members of certified B Corporations. The movement is rapidly growing in the US, where there are now 468 certified B Corps as well as several states with B Corp legislation. Currently there are only 20 certified B Corps in Canada. The photo below was taken in front of the site where the USA’s Declaration of Independence was signed in 1776. In front of this historic site, each member of the group signed B Corp’s Declaration of Interdependence.

Enviro-Stewards’ Water Source Protection work profiled in Credit Valley Conservation Case Studies

Enviro-Stewards was retained by Credit Valley Conservation (CVC) to assist with the design and implementation of drinking water source protection measures in the Mississauga area. Three industrial/commercial sites participated in the program, and the pollution prevention measures that Enviro-Stewards facilitated are detailed in recently published case studies.

2011 Annual Habitat for Humanity Build

Once again, Enviro-Stewards shut its office for the day on August 24th to participate in its annual Habitat for Humanity Build in Kitchener, Ontario.

This year we were very pleased to again be joined by our friends from the Guelph Food Technology Centre (GFTC) and Toyota Boshoku.
